Coward & Black Vineyards

Blessed with ancient gravelly-loam soils, a pristine maritime environment and hot dry summers Coward and Black is a world-class small vineyard located in the Wilyabrup sub region of Margaret River.



Actually it’s two small vineyards, one adjacent to our cellar door and an older, dry-grown vineyard on a gently sloping hill at the rear of our property. Our total planting is 15 acres. Our winemaker is Clive Otto.

We believe that great wine comes from great fruit and we put our focus on the vineyard and our faith in the seasons. After our first vintage we entered five wines in the Perth Royal Wine Show and won five medals. Our vineyard is named the traditional European way using the owners’ surnames.

    Fruity sweeter wine. Hand picked Semillon from our front vineyard. Extremely refreshing lunch wine with strong citrus hints of bitter lemon, and Seville oranges. Surprisingly Gin and Tonicy. One for around the pool. Summer lunches. Serve very cold.

    We picked the Cabernet and Shiraz grapes for this wine late in the evening and let them sit in the picking crates right through the cool night so the natural colour of the skins could gently evolve. The result is an amazing, naturally formed, vibrancy, perfectly matching the superb nose and palate of this beautiful wine. Made from Estate grown Cabernet and Shiraz grapes from our Willyabrup vineyard this wine is perfect for lunch on a warm summers day with cold chicken, crunchy bread, fresh greens and roasted tomatoes. Or maybe sunset on a balmy night as a refreshing end to a perfect day.

    Coward and Black Show Shiraz 2006
    Opulent, powerful and seductive. With it's dark cherry, purple red colour and black plum and white pepper aromas this stunning shiraz is a joy to behold. Ripe fruit, a fleshy mid palate and soft tannins make it perfect to drink now or cellar for years. Fantastic with pasta, or slow cooked lamb with rosemary and garlic. Delicious.
