Cabernet Sauvignon - The Black Prince

Our Cabernet vines were the first ones planted - located on a beautiful, gently sloping section of our 200 acre property with perfect Wilyabrup soils.

The first Cabernet Sauvignon vintage was bottled in 2004, the same year founding partner Martin Black's first son was born. Two years later after the birth of his second son, the wine became known as The Brothers, to reflect the love the boys had for the Margaret River property where they were always free to roam, running amongst the vines.

Some years later, the Black family moved to live on Princes Street and a family friend began referring to the boys as the Black Princes. Like the wine, they were improving with age, and as they entered their teenage years the name of the wine was officially changed to The Black Prince.

The Black Prince has become one of Coward & Black’s most awarded and best-selling wines and has been a perennial favourite since the first vintage.

While it has won many medals and awards over the years, The 2020 was an absolute standout with The Black Prince recognised as the best Cabernet in the world at the prestigious International Wine and Spirit Competition (IWSC) in London.

With The Black Prince selling only through Coward & Black’s two celllar doors (located within sister company Providore in both Margaret River and the Swan Valley) and online, it sells out every year.

Many believe the current 2023 is the best vintage yet, but like the two now young adults, the best yet to come.
